NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)

  • A grassroots organization dedicated to building better lives for those affected by mental illness in America with one of the largest and most active storytelling sites.

  • The stories here are candid and inspiring, and their 7 Steps to Tell Your Story guide and Story Practice Sheet are extremely useful.

    • Not Alone (for general population)

    • ok2talk (for target teens and young adults)

    • Personal Stories (for friends and families affected by mental health, in addition to the individuals)

The Mighty

  • A digital health community created to empower and connect people facing health challenges and disabilities through stories that not only inspire people, but also to improve the lives of people facing disease, disorder and disability. Their regularly-updated mental health topic section is filled with moving and encouraging stories.


This is My Brave

  • The organization believes in the power of storytelling to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness. You can read, listen, or watch these live presentation of touching essays, original music, poetry and comedy performed by a dozen individuals living with―or loving someone with―a mental illness.

SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association)

  • Though this organization does not host stories on their site, they have provided a comprehensive storytelling guide that is full of handy tips and tools!
